Pacific hermit crab (aquatic) dead or laying eggs?

I found some stow away hermit from the Oregon coast and have been keeping them at my house. They are aquatic cold salt water and I have not been able to learn much about them. They are brown with a white dot on each leg and a little blue on their legs. One large one appears dead. He crawled out of his shell and has what looks like black eggs attached to his body. The other large on has the black stuff on him, he is alive but out of his shell. I have been giving them different shells to see which would work but none have yet. Is this black stuff eggs or a fungus or what? If you are an expert on cold salt water hermits I can email you pictures.
